How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows

To open HEIC photos on Windows, install Microsoft’s free HEIF Image Extension. Then you can save each photo as JPG from the Photos app or Paint. For many photos at once, use a batch converter.

Step 1: Let Windows open HEIC files

  1. Open the Microsoft Store and search for HEIF Image Extension.
  2. Install it. It’s free and published by Microsoft.
  3. Double-click a HEIC photo. It should open in Photos. If Photos asks for the HEVC Video Extensions as well, that one has a small fee; you can skip it and use the batch option below instead.

Step 2: Save the photo as JPG

With the Photos app

  1. Open the HEIC photo in Photos.
  2. Click the … (See more) menu and choose Save as.
  3. Pick JPG as the file type, then click Save.

With Paint

  1. Right-click the photo and choose Open with → Paint.
  2. Choose File → Save as → JPEG picture.

Both work one photo at a time, which gets slow for an album.

Converting lots of photos at once

Our HEIC to JPG converter takes up to 100 photos (or a whole folder) and converts them in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, no extension is needed, and you can download everything as one ZIP. It also removes hidden location data from the copies.

Stop getting HEIC files in the first place

If the photos come from your own iPhone, it can send JPGs instead. SeeHEIC vs JPG for the two iPhone settings, orsend iPhone photos to a PC in full quality.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t my Windows PC open HEIC photos?

Windows needs Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extension to read HEIC files. Without it, the Photos app shows an error or a prompt to install it from the Microsoft Store.

Is the HEIF Image Extension free?

Yes, it’s free in the Microsoft Store. Some photos and Live Photo videos may also ask for the HEVC Video Extensions, which Microsoft sells for a small fee.

How do I convert many HEIC files at once on Windows?

The Photos app and Paint save one file at a time. To convert a whole folder, use a batch converter: BananaFast’s HEIC to JPG tool takes up to 100 photos at once in your browser and downloads them as a ZIP.

Will converting to JPG lower the quality?

Very slightly, but at high quality settings the difference is very hard to see. JPG files are usually larger than the HEIC original.
