Online renewal photo file rules

File size54 KB to 10 MB
FormatsJPG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF (JPEG is the safest)
EditingOriginal photo only: no filters or retouching
PhotoColor, taken in the last six months, white background, not a selfie

From the State Department’s Uploading a Digital Photo page, checked October 22, 2026. Check the official page before you apply.

Why your photo might be refused

The State Department says unacceptable photos are the most common reason applications are put on hold. A file this page fixes (wrong format or size) is the easy part. Most refusals are about the photo itself: shadows, a background that isn’t white, glasses, or a selfie taken at arm’s length.

Frequently asked questions

What file size does the online passport renewal photo need?

Between 54 KB and 10 MB, according to the State Department’s upload instructions. A normal phone photo is usually already in that range.

Can I upload a HEIC photo from my iPhone?

The upload instructions list JPG, PNG, HEIC and HEIF. Another State Department page asks for JPEG, so if your HEIC upload is refused, convert it to JPG here.

Does this crop or edit my photo?

No. The State Department wants the original, unedited photo, so this page never crops, resizes or retouches it. It only changes the file format to JPEG and, if the file is over 10 MB, compresses it to fit.

Will this make my photo meet every passport photo rule?

No. It only fixes the file. The photo must still follow the rules: in color, taken in the last six months, against a white background, taken by someone else (not a selfie), with no filters.

Is my photo uploaded to BananaFast?

No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device.
