Frequently asked questions

What size should a DS-160 photo be?

A square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, 240 kB or smaller. This page makes it exactly 600 × 600, which is within the rules and keeps the file well under 240 kB.

Will this make my photo meet every visa photo rule?

No. It fixes the file: size, pixels and format. The photo itself must still follow the State Department’s rules, such as a plain white or off-white background, your head filling 50–69% of the image height, a neutral expression and no glasses.

My photo isn’t square. What gets cut off?

The middle square is kept and the top and bottom (or the sides) are trimmed. Take the photo with your head centered and some space above it, or crop it square yourself first so you choose what stays.

What if my photo is smaller than 600 × 600?

It can’t be used: photos are never enlarged here, because that only makes them blurry. Take a new photo with your phone or camera at full resolution.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. That matters for an ID photo.
