Where WebP files come from
WebP is an image format created by Google to make web pages faster. Many large websites now serve their pictures as WebP, so “Save image as…” in Chrome, Edge or Firefox often gives you a .webp file instead of a JPG.
Where you still need JPG
- Older photo editors and some Windows and Mac apps
- Online forms and upload pages that only accept JPG or PNG
- Printing services and photo kiosks
- Sending pictures to people whose devices might not open WebP
