Frequently asked questions

What size should a profile picture be?

Use a square. X asks for 400 × 400 and Facebook Pages for 320 × 320. Instagram and TikTok don’t publish a recommended size, so a square of 400 pixels or more works everywhere and looks sharp.

Why does my photo look blurry after I post it?

Platforms shrink and recompress large photos. Uploading at the recommended size, such as 1080 pixels wide for Instagram, means less is changed and your photo stays sharper.

Can I make a small photo bigger to match these sizes?

You can, but enlarging stretches the pixels you already have and won’t add detail. For ID photos, retake a small photo instead of enlarging it.

How often do these sizes change?

A few times a year. YouTube, for example, raised its recommended thumbnail from 1280 × 720 to 3840 × 2160. Each row links to the official page so you can check it.
