Why is my downloaded image a .webp file?
You right-clicked an image, chose “Save image as…”, and got a .webp file that your app won’t open. Here’s why, and how to fix it in seconds.

Why websites use WebP
WebP is an image format created by Google to make web pages load faster. A WebP image is usually noticeably smaller than the same picture as a JPG or PNG, so many large websites, online stores and image services now send their pictures as WebP.
When you save an image, your browser keeps the format the website sent. That’s why “Save image as…” in Chrome, Edge or Firefox often gives you a .webp file, even though the page looked like it showed an ordinary photo.
Why some apps won’t open it
All modern browsers display WebP, but some photo editors, older programs, online forms and printing services still expect JPG or PNG. You might see “unsupported file type”, or the file may open in your browser instead of your photo app.
How to get a JPG or PNG
Convert the file (fastest)
Use our WebP to JPG converter for photos, orWebP to PNG for logos and graphics with transparent backgrounds. Both run in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and you can convert up to 100 files at once.
Open it in another app and re-save
Some image apps can open WebP and “Save as” or “Export” to JPG. This works for one file at a time but gets slow for many.
JPG or PNG?
- JPG for photos: small files that open everywhere.
- PNG for logos, icons and graphics, especially with transparent backgrounds.
A note on copyright
Converting an image’s format doesn’t change who owns it. Only reuse images you have permission to use.
