Where 500 KB limits come from

Many universities and organizations ask staff to keep web images under 500 KB so pages load quickly. Two examples, checked October 29, 2026:

Resize first, then compress

A page that shows an image 1,200 pixels wide still downloads the whole 4,000-pixel original if you upload it as is. Set a width under “Resize” (for example 1,200 or 1,920 pixels for a full-width image), then compress. Both steps happen in one go here. For WordPress, Shopify and Squarespace tips, see compress images for a website.

Need a different limit? Try 300 KB,1 MB or any size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress an image to 500 KB?

Add it and press Compress. The tool keeps the highest quality that fits under 500 KB. Most phone photos get there with no visible change.

Is 500 KB small enough for a website?

It’s a common upper limit for large photos. For smaller images, such as thumbnails or photos in a narrow column, 100 to 200 KB is usually plenty.

Should I use JPEG or WebP?

Both work in every current browser. WebP is often smaller at the same quality; JPEG is safest if a site or app only accepts JPG.

Can I do a whole folder at once?

Yes. Add up to 100 images, or drop a folder, and download them all as a ZIP.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so photos of students, patrons or clients stay on your computer.
